Maria Becker
Biography
Maria Becker
Born in Berlin, Germany, her parents were actors Maria Fein and Theodor Becker. After her parents divorced, Becker's sister stayed with her father, while she grew up with her mother in Berlin, although she was cared for mainly by her grandmother. Becker studied at the Kleistlyzeum in Berlin, and between 1930 and 1933 at the Schule am Meer boarding school in Juist. She described her time at Juist as the happiest of her life, and she had her first acting experiences at the downtown theater.
From 1933 he studied again in Berlin. When his mother, who was of Jewish descent, could no longer perform at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin after the Machtergreifung (takeover of power by the Nazis), he emigrated with her to Vienna in 1936. There, and despite his young age, Becker was trained at Max Reinhardt's seminary. When the Anschluss occurred in March 1938, both fled abroad.
Becker first spent a short time in England, and in 1938 she was hired to work at the Schauspielhaus Zürich in Switzerland. There he met Austrian-Swiss actor Robert Freitag. Freitag had also trained at Reinhardt's seminary, and since 1941 he had worked at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, a major center for fugitives during World War II. In 1945 Maria Becker and Robert Freitag married, with which Becker obtained Swiss citizenship.
Later Becker worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna, at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, and at the Residenztheater in Munich. Together with her husband and the theatrical actor Will Quadflieg, Becker founded the traveling theater company Die Schauspieltruppe Zürich (or Zürcher Schauspieltruppe) in Zurich in 1956, with which she made numerous tours throughout the German-speaking world, as well as the United States.
Becker divorced Robert Freitag in 1966. However, the couple continued to work together until the 1990s, especially on productions for the company Zürcher Wanderensembles, which they both founded. The couple had three children, two of whom were actors, Benedict Freitag and Oliver Tobias .
Becker was known internationally for her portrayal of great female figures, such as Electra, The Maiden of Orleans or Ifigenia, working for media such as the British Broadcasting Corporation in works by Euripides, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and George Bernard Shaw. Among other works, she acted in Faust in 1977, at the Residenztheater, playing the main female character. In Germany he also participated in numerous radio drama productions, for stations such as Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Norddeutscher Rundfunk. She also frequented the cinema and television, being recognized by the public for her performance in television series such as Derrick and Der Alte. At the same time he devoted himself to management in his company Schauspieltruppe Zurich. In it, her son Benedict Freitag, who led the ensemble with her in the 1980s, assumed her solo direction in 1987.
Maria Becker passed away in 2012 in Uster, Switzerland, at the age of 92 She was buried in the Enzenbühl Cemetery, next to her mother's grave
